Robert (Bob)'s Story
Life
I graduated from QHS in 1978. I was Senior class president, played football for Coach Leonard and Coach Alvey, and was on the yearbook staff. During the spring, I ran track for Mr. Potvin.
I left Virginia for the Santa Cruz Mountains almost immediately upon graduation. That fall, I attended San Jose State University as a declared Psychology major. After two years, I caught a flight (a $69 special!) to Hawaii and began making plans to stay and transfer to the University of Hawaii.
Hawaii; I couldn't think of a better place to be a poor student. Having modified my major to Zoology (Marine Biology) and Psychology, I soon found that I was literally surrounded with opportunities to gain experience in the field of Marine Science.
I stayed in Hawaii for almost 8 years, most of which I spent working as a research technician for the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. There, I worked on reef restoration, aquaculture, mariculture, language acquisition with bottlenose dolphins, water quality analysis, and spent time aboard the submersible "Maka li'i" (I won't tell you what we were doing 500 feet below the surface, you'll have to ask!).
In 1986 I returned to the mainland and worked as a Behavior Specialist developing operant conditioning programs for autistic and developmentally disabled children with severe behavior problems. Much different from my salty days at sea, I enjoyed the challenge and was satisfied that part of my education was being put to good use.
In 1991, I took a month-long trip to Costa Rica. This was well before the infestation of ziplines and E-ticket eco-tourism. Taking a bus to Monteverde meant a four hour trip with "Ticos" a...Expand for more
nd maybe one or two Canadians. The only thing missing were chickens in the aisles. It was certainly a cultural experience.
It was on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, on a jungle trail near Manuel Antonio, where I experienced an epiphany that I belonged back in the animal sciences field. With Howler monkeys vocalizing in the distance, Capuchins running above me, leaf-cutter ants parading below me, and coatis running a muck, it was anything but subtle.
After my month long sojourn, I returned to the States and eventually began volunteering at the San Diego Zoo's Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species. After a year of volunteering, I was hired in the Primate behavior research division. Since 1993, I have worked in a number of areas at the San Diego Zoo. Most of my time (9 years) was spent as a Senior Hospital Keeper. I can honestly say that I have had the pleasure to work with just about every animal in our collection.
Today, I am the Animal Care Supervisor at San Diego Zoo's Children Zoo. It's a small zoo within a zoo. Binturongs, servals, ocelots, tree kangaroos, wombats, red pandas, and dik diks are just a few of the animals one can find here.
My wife...I met Lori 13 years ago and we have been best friends and companions ever since. I never thought that there could be such a true match for anyone...but she is living proof! We both love to travel and have enjoyed France, Italy, Australia and Hawaii together. Our adventures have not been limited to overseas however. In 2004, we escaped from New Orleans with the masses when Katrina hit the Gulf Coast.
We have no children but do have a very attentive dog and affectionate feline.
